Word of warning upfront: The content of this wiki was mostly taken over from the original libravatar wiki. There might be outdated information and/or dead links - please don't hesitate to contact us in case you see any issues.

iVatar is a free service and an open specification for hosting profile images tied to email or OpenID addresses. It's rewritten from scratch in 2018, when the original author (François Marier 1) of libravatar ("Libre Avatar") decided to close the service for various reasons. TODO: Link here.

In order to have your photo displayed next to your posts and comments on sites which support Libravatar you can either create an account with us or run your own node of the federated avatar network.

  • Features

Technology

Inspired by the elegant solution pioneered by Gravatar, Libravatar takes a federated approach to the problem and allows domain owners to specify the server that should host images for their organisation.

  1. Many thanks François for creating this service and running it for so long. I hope to see you filing bugs against iVatar, but it would be even more of a pleasure to merge code you contribute. ↩
